Kent has an identity acquired much earlier than most English counties, helped by the natural unity conferred by its peninsular configuration. In some ways it has managed to retain them, in spite of its nearness to the capital, and in spite of its having been the highway to and from the Continent; in prehistoric days migrants could walk from Cap Gris Nez to the South Foreland. Though the Romans withdrew from Britain in 54 B.C. they returned in A.D. 43, followed by the Saxons and Normans. Now the Channel Tunnel has again made Kent a super-highway between Europe. 165 color and b/w illustrations.
