The capture of an unusual creature in the foothills of the Himalayas (the 'abode of the gods') results in a series of bizarre and destructive events around the world. Review
'It (Carew) ranks right up there for excitement and entertainment with Mills' growing list of best selling and critically acclaimed stories, including her recently well-received 'The Strange Voyage of The Raconteur
'. - Books in Canada

'The setting and concepts behind this story are ones worth pursuing, and Mills clearly has a vision to share. Mills invites her readers to consider the interdependence of all forms of life and to entertain the intriguing notion that animals, too, may have a sense of the sacred.' -
Quill and Quire

'Adventure and mystery abound in this fine story. Carew is a fun read that can be heartily recommended for the younger set. So, if you care about what you give your children and grandchildren to read this is definitely a tale worth purchasing for them.' -
Lancette Journal of the Arts

'Mills well-crafted story delivers a very real message about the importance of preserving the natural world: if we do not respect the environment, we may never know what we have lost.' -
Canadian Children's Book News

'In Carew, J.C. Mills explores the interrelation of all living things and the precarious balance and precious link that binds them all. Mills suggests that restraint and preservation is the route by which this balance might be maintained. -

From the Author
From the moment I first read ( at age nine) zoologist Gerald Durrell's wonderfully poignant and very funny chronicle of his boyhood on the island of Corfu -
My Family and Other Animals - I was hooked not only on wildlife conservation but on reading, too.
Carew has grown out of a love for and fascination with the animal world that I have harbored ever since, along with a conviction that our planet is probably hiding more mysteries and wonders than we could ever hope to discover or understand.
I am continually amazed at the number of creatures that we read about on the newswires and in science journals - many just during the months I was working on this manuscript. Some were brand new, never before seen; while others, long believed extinct, were emerging once again; everything from monkeys and bears to butterflies, birds, frogs and fish. They were found inhabiting the deepest realms of the Coral Sea, a remote island in Indonesia, the swamps of Arkansas, or - as in one recent case - a dark, leafy forest in the shadow of Mt. Everest - just like in
Carew! Who knows what other amazing things are out there waiting to be revealed. And yet - sadly - all these marvelous discoveries don't even begin to add up against the number of living things that routinely disappear off the face of the earth forever - and with little fanfare - or suddenly find themselves teetering on the brink of extinction. All the more reason, I think you would agree, for all of us to quickly find a way to better respect, preserve and protect the natural wonders around us.
From the Inside Flap
There's a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Khatmandu,There's a little marble cross below the town; There's a broken-hearted woman tends the grave of Mad Carew; And the Yellow God forever gazes down.- from 'The Green Eye of the Yellow God,' by J. Milton Hayes 1911
