Product Description HIGHER GROUND is based on the author's retreat in the woods of New Hampshire with only her kitten as a companion. It reveals her experiences and thoughts during that period while trying to overcome personal and family situations that were destroying her life. Though written in a day-by-day format from a detailed journal she kept at that time, it is not in journal structure. It reveals how she dealt with fears and problems - her successes and failures - and her philosophical and religious thoughts on a variety of subjects. It includes approaches to coping with distressing situations and actual steps to healing. HIGHER GROUND is written for anyone who is looking for ways to solve personal problems. Anyone contemplating conversion to the Catholic Church, or anyone who has previously converted, would find help and support - though anyone who is troubled will find help. HIGHER GROUND uses faith and the Church as effective tools in problem solving and achieving inner peace. It is an example of how to conquer despair and find fulfillment and power to change. From the Inside Flap Higher Ground is really the beginning ... that precious time when the author placed herself into a forced retreat ... into the silence, into nature, and into her 'self' ... and where she wrote journals in an attempt to dissolve her deepest pains and confont long-standing fears. Accompanied only by her kitten as companion, she sought the woods of New Hampshire. There, surrounded by the trees and stars, she revealed, in words on paper, her deepest philosophical and spiritual thoughts on a variety of topics. In these reflections, Jan Kolb discovers, ultimately, the deep current of inner guidance and self-healing which transformed her life. Higher Ground will help the reader look at daily experiences with a fresh point of view ... and teaches how to handle success and failure from a state of inner faith and peace. As Jan is also Catholic, she weaves the rich symbolism and teachings of her faith into real-life 'solutions' for healing painful and stressful personal or interpersonal situations. Written freely, and from the heart, Higher Ground is a small treasure reserved for those who retreat into the silence and who wish to renew their purpose for living. Always this had been a dream - to stay by myself in our cottage in New Hampshire. Now that time had come. Depression and sadness had been settling in on me for too many months due to personal and family concerns. Each day's existence had become a hardship. My eyes filled with tears at unexpected moments. Though never intended, there were often times when I would sit for a minute to try to get myself together only to find later I had been there immobile for an extended period. Everything mattered intensely yet nothing mattered at all. The smallest chore was too big. Merely trying to begin anything was such an effort that I frequently just gave up completely. To deliberately think about the problems was painful. My feelings of utter helplessness left me questioning over an
