Paul Newman wasn't just the famously blue-eyed Hollywood actor who turned in some of the great performances in modern cinema in films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Color of Money, The Hustler and Cool Hand Luke. He was that rare contradiction: a humble celebrity, and also, in the rest of his life, a generous philanthropist. Shawn Levy's biography - 'astonishing in its consistency and level of achievement' (Washington Post) - tells the story of a genuinely decent man who achieved so much more in his life than just iconic film performances: outspoken political campaigning on civil rights and nuclear proliferation; his Newman's Own brand of sauces and dressings that built into a business generating more than $250 million for charity; even the oldest driver even to win a major motor race. But Newman also had feet of clay, as Levy's fair and balanced portrait reveals. He consistently drank more than was good for him, wasn't entirely faithful to his longstanding wife Joanne Woodward, and was devastated by his son's death of a drug overdose. Immensely talented, hard-working, convinced he was much less interesting than the world appeared to find him, Newman led a life rich enough to make a superbly compelling and engrossing biography.
