DS Catrin Price is on administrative duty recovering from the trauma of her last case when she receives a series of cryptic messages from an old school friend. She tracks him down to an isolated town near the wilds of the Brecon Beacons. There she finds him destroyed by fear for his missing daughter and living in terror of a shadowy figure he refuses to name.

Before Cat can begin to investigate the daughter's disappearance, another teenage girl is found dead in an abandoned mine shaft. The girl's death appears not to be connected to a series of missing persons cases in the area, but Cat is convinced sinister forces are at work.

Cat embarks on a journey that takes her deep into the criminal underworld of London and into the darkest corners of the mind. She will stop at nothing to uncover the truth, but there are people who will stop at nothing to keep those truths hidden -- and they are watching her every move.
